Birsa Munda belonged to the Munda tribe in the Chota Nagpur plateau region. On October 1, 1984, the Mundas started a movement against the tax levied by the British and by gathering many Mundas, they agitated for the waiver of the tax. In the year 1895, Birsa Munda was arrested by the British Government and sentenced to two years imprisonment in Hazaribagh Central Jail. But Birsa and his comrades did not give up and kept fighting for their cause. Between the year 1897 and 1900, there were wars between the British and Birsa Munda and his supporters, and Birsa Munda and the people who loved him had put the British in trouble.
In the year 1900, when Birsa was addressing his public meeting at Dombari hill, another clash took place in which many children and women were killed. Later many of Birsa’s companions were arrested and finally Birsa himself was also arrested on February 3, 1900 in Chakradharpur. Birsa died on 9 June 1900. It is said that fearing rebellion, the British did not give him the death sentence, but killed him by giving slow poison.
Even though Birsa Munda is not among us today, but even today Birsa Munda is alive in the heart of every Indian and every patriot.
