What is CID?- Criminal Investigation Department

The full name of CID is Crime Investigation Department. CID is the investigation and intelligence department of the police in a state. It is such an investigation agency that only investigates crimes committed in the states, so theft, kidnapping, riots, murders etc. happen anywhere in the state, CID is responsible for investigating those cases. The work area of CID is limited to the state only. It was established in 1902 by the British government during the British rule.

Each state has a separate CID investigation agency, whose operation is with the state government or the state high court. The High Court of a state or the state government can hand over the investigation of any criminal case to the CID.

What is CBI? – Central Bureau of Investigation

The full name of CBI is Central Bureau of Investigation. CBI is the premier investigative agency of India. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) functions under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Public Grievances, Personnel, and Pensions. The Government of India established it in the year 1963 and its basic objective is to investigate bribery and government corruption. In 1965, it received expanded jurisdiction to investigate violations of central laws enacted by the Government of India, multi-state organized crime, multi-agency or international matters. The CBI is exempted from the provisions of the Right to Information Act as being the investigating agency, confidentiality of information is essential. The agency is known to investigate several economic offences, special offences, corruption cases and other matters. 

What is the difference between CID and CBI?

1. The area of work of the CID investigation agency is a state. The area of work of CBI is up to the whole of India and abroad.

2. Whatever criminal cases come to the investigating agency CID, the responsibility of the state government and the High Court is handed over to them. The responsibility of investigating the criminal cases that come to the CBI is entrusted by the Central Government and the High Court, the Supreme Court.

3. The work area of CID is limited. The work area of CBI is wide.

4. CID also investigates other criminal cases in the state including cases of rioting, murder, kidnapping, theft and assault in the state. CBI investigates national and international level scams, frauds, and cases like murder in the country and abroad.

5. If a person has to join CID, then he has to pass the examination of Criminology after passing the police examination conducted by the State Government. To join CBI one has to clear the exam conducted by SSC board.

6. CID was established in 1902 by the British Government. It was established in the year 1963.
